From 1982 to 1986, there were more than 5000 UFO sightings from the Hudson Valley, perhaps one of the biggest clusters of UFO incidents in history. Although they aren't as frequent, many sightings were reported even after 2000.
The story started on New Years Eve, 1982. A retired police officer was out in his backyard in Kent, New York when he observed a group of strange lights off to the south. They were colored red, green and white. At first he thought they belonged to a jet aircraft in trouble, but as the object passed over his house at a height he estimated to be about 500 feet (150 m), he realized it was moving much too slowly for a jet and made too little noise. Just a distant humming sound. He saw that the lights, which appeared as a "V" shape, were connected by a dark, triangular fuselage.
One night, March 24, 1983, stands out because of the volume. More than 300 residents called a UFO organization's hotline that night, reporting that they had seen large V-shaped array of lights that moved slowly and almost silently through the sky. Some witnesses got close enough to say that the craft was big enough to be a "flying city".
One of the most striking reports was from guards at the Indian Point Nuclear Plant. The UFO hovered over an active nuclear reactor for some minutes, coming as close to the reactor dome as 10 meters. The security supervisor even considered ordering guards to shoot it down. One guard described it as being the length of three football fields.
The UFOs also seemed to be interested in bodies of water. An observer watched a UFO over Croton Falls Reservoir where it seemed to use a red beam to probe the surface.
A UFO investigative group associated with noted scientist Dr. J. Allen Hynek, did a full investigation into the valley sightings. Eventually, a book about the incidents was published: "Night Siege: The Hudson Valley UFO Sightings".
The last reported sightings in "Night Siege" took place late in 1985, but there were many more after that date. For example:
- On January 9, 1986, the police in Hartford and neighboring towns received numerous calls of a low flying large UFO with many lights. Officers were sent to investigate and arrived just in time to see a large boomerang with lights slowly drift over Highway I-84. They saw a dark mass against the brighter night sky, its size estimated about that of a 747, at an altitude of 500 to 800 feet.
- On January 13, people from Thomaston reported an object the size of a football field, hovering in the area and slowly drifting overhead from 10:00-10:30 pm.
- The National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) received 11 sighting reports in 2018.
